For seven years, Fiona has built her life around Garrett, dropping out of her master's program to code late into the night for his software startup and saving every penny for his company. On the evening their parents are to set the wedding date, Garrett never arrives at the steakhouse where her parents, after a six-hour train ride from Ohio, wait as the tea goes cold. When Fiona finally reaches him, it is Amber, his childhood best friend, who answers, claiming a sprained ankle.

Garrett brings Amber home to the apartment he shares with Fiona and installs her in the guest room, ordering Fiona to care for her. He gives away the wedding shoes Fiona had imported for him, then calls her materialistic and impossible.
