The story

On her birthday, Christina's husband Ricky Carpinelli lets his childhood sweetheart Miley mock the scar on her face—a scar Christina got saving his life. When she demands an apology, Ricky humiliates her instead, and she walks out into the cold night, her hand resting on her belly, where a tiny life is growing.

At home, Ricky's friends have wrecked the party, and Miley is resting in the couple's bed. Christina asks for a divorce, but Ricky refuses, tearing open her suitcase and stripping her of everything he bought. She leaves with nothing, vowing to meet him at the Marriage Bureau.

He never shows. Instead, he summons her to the apartment where he keeps Miley, and Christina goes—not for Miley, but to make him sign.

Opening

Everyone was drinking when Ricky's childhood sweetheart suddenly pointed at my face in shock. "Oh, my gosh! That scar looks so gross!" she exclaimed.

Ricky scolded not her but me.

"Christina! How many times do I have to tell you to cover your face in front of my friends?!"

But that scar… I got it saving his life.

My heart ached under the weight of my husband's words, but I held my ground, demanding an apology from him and his childhood sweetheart.

But all I got in return was their mocking laugh.

That left me nothing but to slam the door and storm out.
