The story
Three years after her husband Frank's death, Lydia's daughter Courtney and son-in-law Brad move in, supposedly to care for her. In truth, she has become the unpaid nanny, maid and chauffeur for her granddaughter Lexi, stretching her own pension to cover groceries while Courtney doles out a pittance each month.
When Lydia buys a hundred-dollar refurbished phone, Courtney accuses her of squandering Frank's insurance money and Brad lectures her about optics, waving his own far pricier device. That night, Lydia overhears them scheming over the payout they believe she is hoarding, then finds them rifling through her purse for bank statements.
At dawn, Lexi screams for steak and lobster, and Courtney storms in demanding to know what Lydia has done to her granddaughter. Lydia must decide how much longer she will keep carrying a family that sees her only as a vault.
Opening
Three years into my retirement, my husband, Frank, was killed in a car accident.
My daughter and her husband, worried about me living alone at my age, insisted on moving in. On the surface, I was the envy of every woman in my bridge club. They’d sigh and tell me how lucky I was to have such "devoted" children, how I could finally spend my golden years being pampered.
Only I knew the truth: their devotion was a performance, a well-rehearsed script for the neighbors.
