The story
Years ago, a young woman slapped a college guy who worked nights at a club, humiliating herself in front of her ex-best friend, Vanessa Shannon. Now her family is bankrupt, her parents are gone, and she works as a hostess to survive.
On a shift, she is sent to a private room where the guest of honor is Vanessa, now engaged to Matt Martinez, the founder of Martinez Corp, the man half of Averyton answers to. He is the same college guy she once slapped, and he has not forgotten. Vanessa drags her into drinking games, and when the room demands she strip, Matt orders her out.
Outside, he accuses her of crossing a line he drew: she may take his money and live in his apartment, but she must never go near Vanessa. The reason her family lost everything, she knows, was Vanessa.
Opening
My boyfriend had just ditched me for my best friend, Vanessa Shannon. Then, not even five minutes later, I caught her in the corner, sliding her hand under another guy's shirt.
He bit his lip and just took it.
Something in my brain short-circuited. I stood up and walked over.
If Vanessa wanted him, why couldn't I?
But the second I reached for him, he smacked my hand away.
Vanessa cracked up. The whole private room turned to watch.
