The story
Sonnet has spent a year trading pieces of herself away to her husband, William Aldous. Every favor he grants comes with a price: her name pulled from the employee award so Jolie Howard can have it, the core of a project she built handed over, her place in the company they founded together quietly erased. William calls it fair trade, and he insists Jolie is fragile and needs his support.
When Sonnet's mother, Wilma, is hospitalized and needs surgery, the only surgeon who can perform it is William's uncle, Harold Meyer. Before William can name his terms, Sonnet offers her own: she will sign the divorce papers and let him have Jolie. William's dark reaction confuses her, and his price turns out to be the rosary he once brought her after a car accident, now meant for Jolie. Sonnet hands it over, then rushes to the hospital, where Jolie is at her mother's bedside.
William's next demand is the Bellevue apartment, the first home they bought together. Sonnet agrees, and the divorce papers are folded in with the deed.

No matter what I asked him for, his first move was always the same. He would counter with a question. He would ask, “What’s in it for me?”
One stormy night, my car broke down halfway home, and I was stranded on the side of the road. I kept my voice down and begged him to come get me.
