The story
On her wedding day, Nora Fox learns that the bridal car sent to fetch her has turned back — a taboo in her village, where a car that reverses is said to curse the marriage. Her fiancé, Peter Heath, brushed it off: he had swung around to buy pads for Joanna Reed, who had joined the bridal car before him. When Nora calls off the wedding, Peter blames her for lacking sympathy and asks her family to delay the fireworks so Joanna can watch them.
Nora refuses to wait. She calls another man and tells him to come fetch her, then has her father light the fireworks at the lucky hour. Her father worries about gossip and her happiness, but she insists this man is better than Peter. As the wedding party finally arrives, Nora watches from the window, ready to face Peter with no bride to collect.
Opening
Where we come from, there's a custom for fetching the bride: the bridal car must never turn back. If it does, the marriage is said to be cursed.
But on the wedding day, my fiancé Peter Heath's bridal car reached the turn to my house and suddenly swung around.
Mom and Dad had been watching the road, anxious, and made me call him. "Why did the car turn back? I told you the bridal car can't—"
