The story
Hailey Paltrow has spent five years inside a novel, determined to save Clayton Amos, its doomed antagonist, from the fate that awaits him. She endures his cruelty, takes a knife meant to wound her, and gives up her sleep to buy him the things he loves. When he finally asks her to marry him, she believes she has changed his story.
On their wedding day, a chandelier falls. Clayton shoves Hailey aside to shield Gladys Dawson, the novel's protagonist and his first love, and is wounded in her place. Bleeding and abandoned, Hailey accepts that he never loved her, and the system offers her a way out. She agrees to abort her mission and return home.
As she prepares to leave, Clayton reappears, and Gladys arrives at the house as though it were her own.
Opening
On the day of my wedding, the chandelier in the middle of the hall suddenly snaps and falls. At the most critical moment, he shoves me aside and runs over to protect Gladys Dawson, the protagonist of the novel, and his first love.
Clayton's arm is slashed as a result, and blood pours out of the wound, dyeing his pristine white suit red.
Meanwhile, Gladys remains unharmed in his arms.
