The story
For Grandma's seventieth birthday, Mom orders new outfits for the whole family and books a portrait sitting. Everyone's measurements are current — except Deidre Carpenter's, still listed at the bottom of the family size chart as she was at twelve. Her dress is two sizes too small, but she is told to suck it in and fix her sister Constance's torn strap first.
When a counselor offers a paid pattern-making apprenticeship in a neighboring city, Deidre spends her savings on gray-blue twill for her evaluation piece. Her mother cuts into it for Constance's recital dress, and the family insists she simply buy more. Deidre is left holding a cut length that no longer fits her pattern.
On the chart, her name sits under Other. The deadline is seven days away.
Opening
Dad's shirt fit. My brother's new shoes fit. My sister's waistband had been measured just yesterday.
Only my zipper stuck below my shoulder blades, and no matter what I did, it wouldn't go up.
Mom called through the curtain:
"Deidre Carpenter, suck it in."
"It's just one photo. Bear with it for a minute."
I told her it was two sizes too small.
She took out her phone.
"That's impossible. I bought it off the size chart."
