The story
Ben Bennett's quiet Saturday is broken when a lawyer arrives with news that his ex-girlfriend, Susie Beck, has died in a car accident and named him her sole heir, leaving him five million dollars and a brass key. He wants nothing to do with the money, but a note in Susie's handwriting pulls him back into a past he thought was closed.
At Susie's wake, her boyfriend Justin Shaw and her mother make it clear he is not welcome, and Justin insists Susie was on her way to see him the night she died. Ben slips upstairs to the room Susie called her sanctuary, where a photograph of the two of them and a bulging envelope wait in a drawer.
Before he can open it, a small girl appears in the doorway and asks if he is Ben, saying her mother told her that if she died, she was supposed to go with him.
Opening
A lawyer was standing on my porch, looking crisp and out of place in my neighborhood. "Susie Beck has passed away," she said, her voice practiced and neutral. "Her will names you as her sole beneficiary. It’s an estate valued at five million dollars."
Susie Beck.
