The story
Tessa is beaten into permanent disability by the school bully Brenda, and her father Victor, a star attorney, takes the case as Brenda's defense lawyer. In court he argues flawlessly for a not-guilty verdict, saving the girl who nearly took his daughter's life, because Brenda's mother Glenda sponsored his college education decades ago. When Tessa confronts him, he insists everyone is equal before the law and that he cannot abandon his professional ethics.
Tessa throws disownment papers at him, but he crumples them unread and demands she attend Brenda's victory dinner at The Gilded Fork. Her mother, dependent on his money, drives off to the restaurant anyway. In the hospital, Victor withdraws Tessa's fifty-thousand-dollar surgery deposit to lend to Glenda's family, leaving her account overdrawn, while Glenda visits with a basket of rotting apples and calls her an insolent brat.
Alone in a wheelchair, Tessa watches Brenda celebrate online and realizes her father will strip her bones to keep this family warm.
Opening
I was beaten into a permanent disability by the school bully. Yet, my father, a star attorney, took the case as the defense lawyer for the main attacker.
In court, his words were sharp and flawless as he successfully argued for a verdict of not guilty. He saved the girl who had nearly taken my life.
All because the girl's mother was the benefactor who had sponsored his college education decades ago.
When I confronted him, my father stood tall, entirely self-righteous.
