The story
During a category 4 hurricane evacuation, Eleanor shoves her daughter Hazel off the rescue boat, forcing her to give up her spot for her younger sister Chloe. Hazel's leg is already broken from a fall down the stairs, but Eleanor dismisses her pleas, calling her dramatic and selfish for competing with Chloe.
At the shelter, Eleanor ignores warnings that Hazel's flooded neighborhood is in the rising-water zone. She insists Hazel can swim and is only throwing a tantrum, refusing to call again. Yet when Chloe sneezes, Eleanor panics and rushes her to the doctor. Grandma Martha arrives demanding to know where Hazel is, and the truth of Eleanor's neglect surfaces.
Left alone in the freezing storm, Hazel never answers her phone.
Opening
