The story
At a college reunion, Tyler runs errands for his girlfriend Valerie, only to find his seat taken by her best friend Derek. A former law-school duo now rising at a prestigious firm, Valerie and Derek talk over him, leaving Tyler a background prop in their lives. When Derek produces a monogrammed handkerchief matching Valerie's, the blurred boundaries of their relationship become painfully clear.
After years of quiet dedication, Tyler is still passed over for transfers and promotions while Derek is praised and promoted. When Valerie buys a suit Tyler had admired, she asks if Derek will like it, offering Tyler the hand-me-downs. As the reunion ends, Derek takes the passenger seat of Valerie's car, and the two drive off into the storm, leaving Tyler behind in the worsening rain.
Tyler calls HR to resign, asking that Valerie not be told.
Opening
At the college reunion, I stepped out to run an errand for my girlfriend. By the time I returned, my seat had already been taken by my best friend.
My wine glass and plate had been cleared away, replaced by a fresh, untouched setting.
It was as if I had never been there at all.
Seeing me walk back into the room, Derek made a move to stand up, but Valerie lightly pressed her hand onto his shoulder, keeping him in his seat.
"Don't worry about it," she said smoothly. "We’re talking about our latest case anyway. He wouldn’t understand a word of it. He’d just be sitting here smiling politely."
