The story
After her mother Mary dies of cancer, Chloe cannot move on. At Christmas, she returns home to her father, who numbs himself with whiskey and lives on instant mac and cheese. Neither of them can hide their grief, and their first holiday without her is bleak.
When her father cuts his hand, his blood falls onto a notebook: a diary Mary left for Chloe, filled in her careful handwriting. Its cover says that if Chloe no longer knows how to live, she should let Mom help her one last time. Chloe is afraid to open it, and throws herself into cleaning and baking instead.
But grief overwhelms her, and after failing again at the pie crust, she reaches for a kitchen knife. Her father finds her in time. As she drifts, she hears her mother's voice calling her a silly girl, promising to teach her. The doctor tells her father she has severe depression and suicidal tendencies, and Chloe wonders whether it will break him too.
