The story
For four years, Barbie has built her life around Lucas, believing in the future he promised her. Then, one night, she gains the ability to see lies: every dishonest word he speaks floats before her eyes in burning red, while the truth appears in quiet black. When he whispers that he will love only her forever, the words flare red.
As Lucas's gentle assurances turn red one by one, Barbie notices other signs: a calendar entry for Gemma's birthday, a faint smudge on his collar, and his mother's open praise for Gemma. His friends joke that he and Gemma seem like an old married couple, and he says nothing. Each discovery sharpens the question of how much of their four years together was real.
Barbie books a one-way ticket home, but Lucas keeps offering her a future he may not mean. She must decide whether to keep guarding a man whose words burn red, or return to the one love that never lied.
Opening
During my fourth year with Lucas, I suddenly gained the ability to detect lies.
Whenever someone lied, their words would float before my eyes in a vivid, burning red. Honest words, on the other hand, appeared in a stark, quiet black.
At first, I thought it was a quirky trick.
Until one night, Lucas held me close and whispered, "I will love only you for the rest of my life."
The words flared. A blinding, painful red.
I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.
