The story
Micah ranks first in the district on a statewide college entrance practice exam, yet his family greets the result with fury. His father, Richard, accuses him of humiliating his cousin Trevor, whose own practice score fell short, and locks him inside the home sauna. Micah has a congenital heart condition that makes extreme heat deadly, but his parents dismiss his pounding and pleas as attention-seeking.
While his parents move to a condo near Trevor's prep school to help him prepare for the final exam, Micah is left trapped. Trevor claims the sauna is only seventy-nine degrees and says he gave Micah the key, but the display reads one hundred forty, and his father raises it further as punishment for lying. The housekeeper Rosa, the one person Micah trusted, burns his notes and tells his father he is fine, then bolts the door and leaves.
With his skin splitting and his heart failing, Micah calls 911, then his grandmother, the only family member who ever loved him, to leave what he believes is a final message.
Opening
I ranked first across the entire district on our first statewide college entrance practice exam, but no one in my family was happy.
All because I accidentally laughed once at the dinner table.
My father, who had always favored my cousin, exploded.
"Trevor had a bad practice exam, and you're sitting there laughing?"
"If it weren't for you, Trevor's parents wouldn't have died so young! How dare you use your score to humiliate him?"
Without listening to a word I said, Dad shoved me into the home sauna and locked the door from the outside.
