The story
The night high school graduation ends, Paige receives a message on an old flip phone from someone claiming to be Jasper, ten years in the future. He warns her not to follow him to the same university, and sends photos of himself with her best friend, Tessa, and a family portrait of the two of them with children. He says he is tired of living under her family's charity and that he and Tessa have been together behind her back.
Paige remembers the small kindnesses Jasper always showed Tessa, and quietly changes her college application. She has the family lawyer draft an itemized bill for ten years of living expenses and tuition. When she tells her parents she will not attend Briarwood, Jasper is shaken, but he still leaves to walk Tessa home, using Paige's fear of the dark as an excuse.
Then a classmate sends her a photo from a boutique hotel, and the future Jasper's threats grow darker: if she does not play along, her family will pay with their lives.
Opening
The moment high school graduation ended, I sent Jasper a hundred-thousand-dollar invoice for ten years of living expenses and tuition.
It all started when a text message suddenly popped up on my old, long-forgotten flip phone.
"If you can see this message, please do not choose the same university as Jasper."
I showed it to Jasper as a joke. He was furious, insisting on calling the number back to scream at whoever was playing such a sick prank.
But that night, another message and a handful of photos froze me right where I stood.
