The story
Nora is seriously ill and has stopped chemotherapy, yet her family treats her as an intruder. Her parents adopted Jane to keep her company, but Jane has become the favoured daughter, while Nora is blamed for every conflict and called selfish and heartless. Her mother even strikes her, drawing blood, and takes Jane out to celebrate instead.
Determined to stop being trampled on, Nora returns home and stands up to them, slapping Jane in return for earlier cruelty. She plans to stay only until her mother's birthday, hiding both her failing health and a stray puppy she rescues from the streets.
With her mother's birthday approaching, Nora must decide how much of her remaining strength to spend on the family that has already turned against her.
Opening
It was all on you.
Mom and Dad said adopting Jane was supposed to keep me from getting lonely.
But since Jane showed up, I had become the loneliest one around here.
They just let her tear up my dresses, shove whiskey down my throat, and even kill my puppy.
Mom told me to toughen up and look out for my "sister".
I hadn't told her that I was seriously ill, practically knocking on death's door.

I was two months into saying no to chemo.
The doctors weren't kidding—my health was tanking, and now I could barely make out the fireworks outside.
