The story
When Mark's best friend Chad breaks his leg and moves into the guest room, fresh flowers start appearing on the porch every afternoon. Chad jokes that ten years of marriage and Mark and Lena are still obsessed with each other. Mark knows better: in a decade, his pragmatic wife has never bought him a single flower.
Then Lena returns from a business trip and hands Chad an enormous arrangement of hydrangeas and limited-edition Jordans, while Mark receives a blender meant for making Chad's protein smoothies. When a pot of soup spills and burns Mark's foot, Lena only scolds him for delaying Chad's dinner. Mark has already learned that Chad was Lena's college sweetheart, the one who got away, and that everyone urged him to let it go.
With their son Noah to think about, Mark packs a bag, but Lena insists he cannot leave, because who will take care of Chad?

Chad would lean heavily on his crutches, a smirk playing on his lips as he nudged my shoulder. "Ten years of marriage and you guys are still this obsessed with each other. I'm jealous, man."
I forced a smile, but my stomach tightened. I knew the truth. In a decade of marriage, my wife had never bought me a single flower. She wasn’t the romantic type, she always said. Pragmatic to a fault.
