The story
In the Vale household, everything is decided by drawing lots. After the real son, Asher Vale, returns, a lottery box governs who receives their parents' affection, which dishes are cooked, and even who gets a hug. Silas Vale always draws the short stick, while Asher always draws the long one. Their mother insists this is fairness, and Silas practices shaking the box every day, hoping to earn her love.
On his birthday, Silas secretly glues the two short sticks together so his mother will stay with him. She slaps him and leaves for the amusement park with Asher. The stick stabs into his neck, and Silas dies alone on the bedroom floor, still apologising for dirtying the house.
His ghost follows his mother home, unheard and unseen. She assumes he is sulking over the lottery, calls him ungrateful, and gives his birthday cake to Asher to eat in secret. No one knows he is already dead.
Opening
The chef of the day, who would have to cook a particular person's preferred dishes, had to be decided by drawing lots. Even our parents' kisses and hugs were chosen the same way.
I always drew the short stick. The long stick, by default, belonged to Asher. He never had to do anything to receive our parents' love.
Whenever I felt it was unfair and wanted to cry, Mom would scold me sharply, "I bought the lot-drawing box because I was afraid you'd feel hurt.
