Love Flows Deep Into the Years

For six years, Sadie has loved Max Carter, waiting through every postponed plan and broken promise. When he finally gives her a ring and says he will take her to meet his parents, she cuts off the long hair she grew for three years because his mother prefers short hair. But Max never arrives. Instead, she sees a post from his cycling partner Jane, boasting that he skipped the meeting to make her winter cycling dream come true.

Max calls only to say he is cycling with Jane at Quentin Lake and they will meet his parents some other day. He has forgotten Sadie's pain before, bringing Jane soup while dismissing Sadie's own cramps as drama. Standing in freezing rain with a dead phone, Sadie finally says the words she has never meant before: they are breaking up. Max laughs it off, certain she will come crawling back.

Sadie wakes in a hospital, helped by a passing taxi driver, and blocks Max for good. But when she returns home to pack, Max walks in supporting a pale Jane and demands Sadie make her soup.
