The story
Yvonne Young is dying, and the treatment she cannot afford is the least of her burdens. When James Zane returns home with his fiancée, Wendy Shaw, he finds her hobbling through the hospital on crutches and greets her with a bitter jab about the $100,000 she once took to leave him. She answers with a quiet laugh, and he leaves her with a wedding invitation she knows she will never live to attend.
Soon after, $100,000 arrives in her account from an anonymous sender she recognizes all too well. Then James's mother, Margaret Zane, appears at Yvonne's cramped rented studio with fruit, an envelope of cash and a plea: stay away from James, and keep the truth of five years ago buried so his wedding can proceed. Yvonne agrees, wishing him a happy marriage, then collapses alone once the door closes.
What she hides is the bargain she once struck with Margaret to save the Zane family, and the illness she chose to bear in silence. Her friend Yara York brings her a small gallery job, but the past is not finished with her yet.
