The story
Jessie Hartwell has been branded a liar since birth. Her mother, Claudia Evermore, a brilliant scientist, implanted chips in Jessie and her twin brother Ryan that signal whenever they lie, and she answers with electric shocks. Ryan's chip always glows with a smiley signal, even when he blames Jessie for his own misdeeds; Jessie's chip flashes the devil signal for every small mistake. Told she is irredeemable, just like the gambling father she never met, Jessie grows up believing the punishments are her fault.
On Christmas Eve, Jessie's asthma flares in the attic. Claudia sees only the devil signal on her phone, dials the shock to maximum, and leaves Jessie to suffocate behind a locked door. Jessie dies there, and her ghost watches Claudia and Ryan return home, laughing over dinner and presents, unable to hear or touch her. Claudia climbs to the attic to scold a daughter who can no longer answer, still certain Jessie is lying.
Even in death, Jessie wonders whether her mother will ever forgive her.
Opening
When I was born, I was already a certified liar. That's a fact that everyone seems to agree with.
The truth is, my mom, who's a scientist, has implanted advanced chips into me and my fraternal twin brother, Ryan Hartwell, when we were still babies.
By right, as long as we lie or make mistakes, our mom will receive the devil signal from the chips.
