The story
Vanessa Ashford and Elise Cooley grew up together in the same orphanage, and Vanessa built Kyros Capital into a fortune while Elise married Raymond Farley, the family's least-favored illegitimate son, and helped seat him as chairman of Farley Group. At the gala for the group's public listing and Elise's third wedding anniversary, Vanessa greets her oldest friend — and finds a pulse at her wrist that is faint, severed at the edges, and nothing like the congenital arrhythmia Elise has carried since childhood.
When Vanessa demands to know who she is, the woman wearing Elise's face pleads in Elise's own coaxing voice, and Raymond steps in to call it a family matter. Vanessa presses: the heart medication in the false Elise's clutch is only a vitamin, and she orders Kyros Capital's legal and medical teams to pull every record of the drug and of Elise's visits for the past three years.
Something is wearing her best friend's face, and Vanessa will not let the Farley family bury the truth.
Opening
1: 1
Elise Cooley and I grew up together in the same orphanage.
Later she married the least-favored illegitimate son of the Farley family, and she was the one who tore down the Farley kin for him and put him in the chairman's seat at Farley Group.
As for me, with nothing but a single Primordial Gold Thread, I clawed a fortune out of a heap of the dead, founded Kyros Capital, and became Farley Group's largest outside shareholder.
