The story
Mom and Dad have been divorced for ten years. Heather lives with her paternal grandmother, Eleanor Cain, while her younger sister Hazel Foster stays with Mom on weekdays and Dad on weekends. For a decade, Heather's parents have visited her once a year, and Grandma insists she should be grateful for that much.
Then Heather finds Hazel's social media profile. Photo after photo shows Mom and Dad at Hazel's birthdays, holidays and beach trips, never missing a moment of her life. When Hazel invites Heather to Dreamland, Heather travels hours to meet them, only to learn at the gate that her ticket was meant for the neighbour's child and will not let her in.
As her parents wait in silence for her to take the hint, Heather decides she will stop waiting for them to have time for her.
Opening
Mom and Dad have been divorced for ten years. One day, I come across a discussion thread.
"Are all children of divorce having it hard?"
I join the discussion.
"Not always. Personally, I'm living pretty decently. After my parents' divorce, my sister and I were separated—one of us went to live with our paternal grandparents, and the other with our maternal grandparents.
"For the last ten years, my parents have visited me once a year. Although they usually only stay for a few days, I can tell that they still love me."
Within a minute, someone replies to my comment.
