The story
Cassie spends her days on an e-bike, delivering packages across the city. When a black sedan splashes muddy water over her favorite jeans, she mutters a curse at the driver. Seconds later, the car's tire blows out. She thinks nothing of it until the owner, Gideon Maxwell, tracks her down and offers her five thousand dollars. He has a proposition: she hurls whatever curse she wants at him, and every time it lands, he pays her.
Cassie has always known her mouth is dangerous. As a child, her angry words came true, and she learned to stay silent to protect the people around her. Now she is broke, with rent due and a bike that needs a new battery. Gideon offers fifty thousand dollars if she wins his game, a hundred thousand if she loses. He is clearly unhinged, yet a buried part of her is tempted.
Opening
The words had barely left my lips when a massive BANG echoed down the avenue.
The sedan swerved. The tire had actually blown.
I thought it was just a freak accident, a stroke of karmic luck. But the very next day, the owner of the car tracked me down. He slid a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills across a table—five grand, easy—and gave me a sharp, crooked smile. "How about we play a game, Cassie? You hurl whatever curse you want at me. Every time it lands, I pay you."
