The story
In the autumn when Lily was eight, her father brought her to the city for school. If she didn't finish her homework, there was no dinner; if she scored below 95, she stood until midnight. He worked construction sites and demanded she be number one, while hunger left her dizzy and lightheaded.
At the parent-teacher conference, he announced he hadn't let her eat lunch for three days. Other parents sneered that no wonder his wife had left him. That night he slammed the table over a careless mistake, and a promised trip to the amusement park became a reward that curdled when he refused her cotton candy and called her low blood sugar an excuse.
Hidden in her piggy bank is a slip of paper with a phone number. Late at night, Lily sneaks to a payphone and reaches her mother, begging to be taken away. Before her mother can finish, the call is cut off by a rough hand: her father stands in the shadows, demanding to know who she called.
