The story
To get revenge on her ex-boyfriend, Summer agrees to reconcile with Ethan. When he takes her out for the Carolina Reaper hot chicken she once despised, she eats it without complaint, because chemotherapy has stripped away her sense of taste and she needs someone to keep her company through the final chapter of her life. A diagnosis of Stage IV Gastric Cancer has drained her savings, cost her her job, and left her with no family and a chemo bill she cannot pay alone.
Ethan mistakes her obedience for growth, rewarding her with small transfers and a used designer handbag while he scrambles to please Victoria, the wealthy older socialite he once humiliated Summer for. He calls Summer his flatmate, and Victoria calls the handbag trash. At a private club, a businessman named Barnes demands Ethan down a tumbler of bourbon, and Victoria points a languid finger at Summer instead.
Summer swallows every humiliation to survive, hiding the blood she coughs up and the future she knows is gone.
Opening
After we reconciled, Ethan took me out for Carolina Reaper hot chicken—the very thing I used to despise the most.
Staring at the plate drenched in crimson, blisteringly hot sauce, I didn't beg him to swap it for mild like I used to. Instead, I quietly picked up my fork and took a bite.
Ethan picked up a drumstick and dropped it onto my plate, his voice tinged with a mix of satisfaction and condescension.
"Being apart really changed you for the better. No more picky eating, no more temper tantrums. I like this version of you."
