The story
Ysabelle Lewis commands the Night Owl female special ops unit. During an overseas rescue mission, her team is ambushed and surrounded, and her urgent request to retreat is answered by the commander himself—her ex-husband, Noah Flores. He orders her to hold her position and fight to the death, accusing her of abandoning him at their wedding five years ago.
With ammunition nearly gone and more than a hundred rescued civilians depending on her, Ysabelle pleads for their lives. Noah offers a condition: she must kneel before everyone she saved, confess that she cheated and abandoned her husband, and kowtow one hundred times before he will permit a retreat. Her deputy, Charlie Herrera, calls it murder by proxy, and Ysabelle understands he means to crush her honor before her team.
As the enemy closes in, Noah warns that no one may live to accuse him.
Opening
I am the captain of the Night Owl female special ops unit.
During an overseas rescue mission, my team was ambushed and completely surrounded.
I urgently requested a retreat from the command center—but the order I received came from the commander himself.
My ex-husband.
"Hold your position. Fight to death."
Over the radio, my voice was hoarse with urgency. "The enemy is closing in! If we don't withdraw now, the entire unit will be wiped out!"
His reply was ice-cold.
