The story
Five-year-old Piper Cole sees floating words that no one else can. When she spots a pale girl curled up by a dumpster, the words tell her the girl is a true heiress left to die by her family. Piper tugs her bodyguard Ash and demands her father buy the girl, but Ash explains that people cannot be bought. When the girl coughs blood and collapses, Piper bursts into tears, and her father orders Ash to find another way to save her.
At the hospital, Ash explains that the girl is Callie Hart, lost for eighteen years and neglected by the Harts, who left her behind while vacationing with the fake heiress, Gemma. The floating words reveal that Callie once saved Piper from a baby-swap plot, so Piper decides Callie is hers now. Piper's father adopts Callie, renaming her Summer Cole, and the Greers, who tried the swap, are arrested.
Summer is cautious at home, so Piper takes her to the sandpit to play with the neighbours, Brooks and Violet. Piper is determined to give her new sister a happy childhood.

The moment I saw the girl, pale and curled up like a discarded doll, the words started floating. They always did when something big was about to happen—text flickering above my head, sometimes silent, sometimes a faint whisper only I could hear.
