The story
Harper's friends have always warned her that she treats Carter too well, and that is exactly why he takes her for granted. After a week of cold war, Carter appears at her door with flowers and an apology, cooking her favorite dishes. Harper believes he is finally changing—until she sees a message from Mia Brooks telling him to apologize and be a good boy, and overhears him answering her on the phone with an obedience that is nothing like him.
When Harper checks his phone, Carter explodes, demanding to know what she is looking for. But his gentleness was never his way; he has always been reckless, arrogant and quick to rage, humiliating her in public and blaming her for his own outbursts. Harper begins to wonder why the man who never listens to anyone is suddenly taking orders from Mia.
Ten years together, and now she must decide whether the apology was ever meant for her at all.
Opening
"If you just gave him the cold shoulder and made him feel a little threatened, let's see if he'd still dare to act like this," they'd say.
So, during our latest fight, I didn't back down.
A week later, he took the initiative to make peace.
A bouquet of flowers, a home-cooked meal, an apology.
I thought this was his way of changing.
That is, until I accidentally saw the text message she sent him.
She said: [Go apologize to Harper.
[Be a good boy.]
When I stepped out of the shower, Carter was on the phone.
