The story
When her grandfather Rupert falls gravely ill and needs treatment abroad, Wendy Pittman, a doctor, agrees to take the place of her cousin Bianca and accompany him, leaving her home behind for five years. Her mother Tessa pleaded that frail, orphaned Bianca could not endure such a task.
When Rupert recovers, Wendy flies home to her family, only to find a social media post announcing her mother's daughter's wedding. At the Pittman Mansion, Tessa stands arm-in-arm with Bianca in a wedding gown, and a butler presents a family emerald meant for Rupert's granddaughter, sent by Jared Reilly for his fiancée. Wendy steps forward, claiming the necklace and declaring herself Jared's fiancée and the family's only heiress, while Tessa insists Bianca is her daughter and Wendy merely her niece.
As guests whisper about a bait-and-switch, Tessa strikes Wendy and has her beaten before the crowd, until the old nanny Candace throws herself in front of the blow.
Opening
When my grandpa fell gravely ill and needed treatment abroad, the elders in the family decided to choose a junior to accompany him.
They picked my cousin, but my mom tearfully pleaded with me to take her place.
"You're a doctor. Caring for your grandfather is second nature to you. Bianca is an orphan, frail and delicate. She can't handle such a grueling task."
To save her distress, I agreed to go in Bianca Pittman's stead, embarking on a five-year stay abroad.
