The story
For six years, Irene Lehti has built her life around Niklas Berg, who spends most of each year in Inari, in northern Finland, doing fieldwork on Sámi culture while she remains in London caring for his bedridden mother, Helena Berg. When Irene miscarries from exhaustion, Niklas cuts her off, telling her the project is at a critical stage and to stop bothering him.
Then she sees a promotional video in which Niklas fastens an heirloom silver brooch at the collar of a young Sámi woman, Aila, and says he would gladly stay in the north for her. Without confronting him, Irene signs the Helsinki transfer she had long delayed and leaves her flat key and engagement ring behind.
When Niklas calls to demand she visit Helena and to order her to give Aila the master bedroom for a London shoot, Irene agrees without a fight. Her transfer to the Helsinki Design Archive is approved, and she quietly settles Helena's care and sends Niklas every contact he will need. She is done cleaning up after him.
Opening
In the sixth year of my relationship with Niklas Berg, he spent three hundred days a year in Inari, in northern Finland, doing fieldwork on Sámi culture and traditional crafts.
I stayed behind in London, looking after his mother, Helena Berg, who had been bedridden since her stroke.
The day I miscarried from sheer exhaustion, I was shaking all over with pain. I called him.
Before I could say a word, he cut me off. "Signal's bad up here. The project's at a critical stage. Stop bothering me with every little thing at home."
