The story

At two in the morning, Layla is summoned to the hospital to treat Ava Foster, her husband David's first love. Ava is in end-stage uremia and needs a kidney transplant. When Layla explains that no matching donor has been found, David slaps her, accusing her of jealousy and demanding she test more people.

Layla calmly reveals that a match already exists: David's own kidney is compatible. His expression shifts, and he presses her about her blood type. Layla, an attending physician in nephrology, realizes he brought Ava to her hospital not for her skill but for her kidney. Ava is type O, and Layla is too.

When David asks her to give one of her kidneys to Ava, Layla is left staring at the man who should have protected her, now scheming to take her organ for another woman.

Opening

When I arrived, Ava was lying ghostly pale in the hospital bed. The chart showed end-stage uremia; she desperately needed a kidney transplant.

I explained that her condition was critical, and without a matching donor, there was nothing I could do.

My husband mistook my professional assessment for jealousy. He slapped me hard across the face.

"What kind of doctor are you?" he snarled. "Are you just going to let her die? Test more people until you find a match!"
