The story
Commander Jonathan Shelby is leaving for the military, and at his farewell dinner the neighbour Mrs. Murphy reveals that his military spouse quota has gone to Anna Stewart, a widow, not to his wife Nancy. Nancy's parents already knew; they urge her to be magnanimous and help Anna, whose reputation would suffer if she stayed in the village. Jonathan himself says nothing to defend her.
Nancy has spent three years of marriage mostly alone, working as a teacher by day and running a stall at night, and training for a year to be fit enough to join him. Anna took her clerical position in the unit and will now accompany Jonathan for two years. When Nancy protests, her parents and the guests turn on her, and Jonathan calls her jealous and unreasonable.
Packing her few belongings into one small bag, Nancy tells Mrs. Murphy she wants a divorce. Jonathan blocks her way, insisting she understand his difficult situation, and she answers him with a slap.
Opening
My husband, Commander Jonathan Shelby, was leaving for the military. During his farewell dinner, our neighbor, Mrs. Murphy spoke with glee, as if she was gloating at somebody else’s misfortune. “You’re truly a magnanimous woman. Commander Shelby gave his military spouse quota to Anna instead of you, and you’re still sending him off!”
I found her statement ridiculous.
“Impossible. My husband hates pulling strings. In the past, he also had a quota on hand.
