The story
Abigail booked an anniversary flight months in advance, but at the airport her husband Declan's assistant Lily begged for the ticket, claiming a family emergency. Abigail refused, since she had paid for it herself. That night Declan handed her the glass of milk he always brought, and she drank it and slept.
She woke alone in a scorching desert, with Declan watching from a hovering helicopter, his arm around Lily, while the world watched a live broadcast. He offers her two choices: walk out of the wasteland or kneel and beg Lily's forgiveness. When Abigail asks what she did wrong, he orders her shoes stripped off and thumbtacks scattered across the sand, and a physician warns that her fragile body may go into shock.
As the live comments mock her ruined family and the betting pool swells, Abigail realizes the love she held for five years is gone. Yet she will not kneel.
Opening
I refused, explaining I’d bought the ticket myself.
Later, Declan questioned me. “Did you know she ended up walking home?” he asked, explaining she was trying to reach her dying mother.
I was confused. “Why would she walk? There’s plenty of transport.”
