The story
Chloe has spent her life being blamed for her own suffering. When bullies beat her, her mother Eleanor asks why they only target her. When her tormentor Brooke is welcomed into their home, Chloe is moved into a cramped storage room and told to stop holding grudges. Brooke, once the girl who cornered Chloe in an alley and threatened to post her nude photos, now sits at the dinner table as the favored daughter.
After graduation, two thugs drag Chloe into an abandoned construction site. She crawls home to her mother, who greets her with disgust and accuses her of playing the victim once again. Brooke hands Eleanor a glass of warm water and murmurs that maybe Chloe isn't lying this time. Chloe's voice shakes as she begs to be believed, but Eleanor only tells her she brought it on herself and asks why she can't be more like Brooke.
Silenced and trapped in a house where her pain is a performance, Chloe stands at the doorway with her fists clenched, the last plea for help dying in her throat.
Opening
My mother was a master at victim-blaming.
When I was little, a kid snatched my toy and shoved me to the ground, scraping my hands raw. I ran home in tears, looking for comfort.
She just sneered. "Why would they only steal from you? You’re just too selfish. You never learned to share."
In high school, the bullies beat me black and blue. When I dragged myself home covered in bruises, she slapped me across the face.
"Why are they only picking on you and no one else? Ever think that maybe you’re the problem?"
