The story
Suzy gives up a promotion and a week of work to care for her injured mother, who hands her an envelope holding two dollars. The next day she sees her younger brother Victor's post: he has bought a two-million-dollar riverfront mansion, funded by their mother with their late father's accident compensation and the redevelopment payment for two old houses — money Suzy never knew about and to which she has a legal share. Her mother insists Victor, the son who carries the family name, deserves it all.
At the family dinner celebrating Victor's house, Suzy demands the salary she sent home for years, which her mother claimed to be saving for her wedding. Victor and the relatives mock her, calling her money an investment in her brother, while Victor brags about his job at the Rivers Group — a post quietly arranged by Suzy's boyfriend, Ethan Rivers.
Suzy refuses to let the matter drop, insisting on repayment or her name on the deed.
Opening
To take care of my mother after she fell and injured herself, I turned down a promotion and took a week off work to stay by her side.
On the day she was discharged from the hospital, she smiled and handed me a small envelope.
“Suzy, you’ve worked hard these past few days. This is just a little something from me. Go treat yourself to something good.”
I wiped my hands, a quiet warmth spreading through my chest.
