The story
For eleven years, Clara has been the girlfriend Ethan is sure will never leave. He photographs Sophie for a nine-photo carousel, replies that Sophie has a unique aura, and keeps none of Clara's own pictures. When Clara says she is serious about breaking up, he jokes that she is crying wolf again.
At a murder mystery night, Clara overhears Ethan and their friends mock her jealousy, then agree to cast him and Sophie as lovers. Sophie posts a story of interlaced fingers; Ethan comments beneath it. Clara knocks on her father's study and asks to apply to UCLA, choosing finance and the West Coast over NYU and Ethan.
A spare ticket to the Mori Daido exhibit goes to Leo, a model from Ethan's photo club, who photographs Clara with a patience Ethan long ago stopped showing her.
Opening
“Is this because I posted her on my Instagram?”
“Yes.”
He squinted, focusing the lens. “So how long is this one?” he asked with a smile. “A week? Two? Don’t make it too long, I might forget who you are.”
After eleven years, he couldn’t fathom the idea of me actually leaving.
But this time, I was serious.
When college decisions came, he accepted his offer from NYU. I enrolled at UCLA, on the opposite side of the continent.
From then on, we were worlds apart.
