The story
For eight years Isabella has stood beside Don Luca of the Villani family, serving as his secretary and his fiancée, while their wedding was postponed again and again. At a party, the Romano family’s consigliere forces a drink on her, but Luca only watches Gianna, picking the lime from her glass and later ordering Isabella out of the car so he can take Gianna bar-hopping. He cancels the wedding a ninety-eighth time.
This time Isabella does not argue. She throws her engagement ring into the Landford River, hands over her work at the family headquarters, and contacts the Anderson family, who have long wanted to recruit her. Luca notices the missing ring and demands an answer, but Gianna’s scream pulls him away.
As Luca carries Gianna off and the other mafia families watch, Isabella quietly plans her flight out of the country, weighing what is left of eight years against a future of her own.
Opening
When I was being harassed by the Romano family’s consigliere, my fiancé, Don Luca of the Villani family, was busy kissing and drinking with Gianna at a party.
To secure the partnership, I had no choice but to drink the glass the consigliere pressed against my lips.
My stomach churned violently, and I could barely breathe.
However, Luca never once looked at me.
