The story
At a Christmas family dinner, Vivi brings her boyfriend Gabriel home to meet her relatives. When her cousin Cora runs from the table with morning sickness, Gabriel steps in and claims the baby is his, then leads Cora away, leaving Vivi behind amid her family's whispers that Cora was always the better match.
Vivi's father collapses and is rushed to the hospital. There, Vivi overhears Gabriel telling a doctor friend that the baby isn't his — he simply couldn't bear to see Cora judged. He insists he will still marry Vivi, but his every thought and care belongs to Cora.
As her father recovers and urges her to end things, Vivi must decide what to do with a man who has always loved someone else.
Opening
Five years into our relationship, I brought my boyfriend, Gabriel, home for the Christmas holidays to meet my family.
At the grand family dinner, my relatives couldn't stop singing the praises of the man who had once been his state's valedictorian.
But then, my single cousin, Cora, suddenly gagged and ran from the table, clearly fighting a wave of morning sickness.
My aunt, her mother, was mortified. She raised her hand, ready to slap her.
"You're an Ivy League graduate!" she shrieked. "How could you let yourself get knocked up by God knows who?"
