The story
On her wedding night, Nina watches her new husband Liam drink himself into a stupor, only to hear him murmur another woman's name: Robin, her best friend of twenty years. A tattoo of a robin rests over his heart, and the truth settles over her — he married the wrong woman. Robin's caring messages keep arriving, the same gentle concern that once seemed like sisterly love.
When Liam wakes, he defends Robin and turns on Nina, then swears the feeling was one-sided and offers to have the tattoo removed. At the parlor the next morning, a call about Robin's car accident sends him rushing out, and Nina's quiet refusal to follow draws his disgust.
Nina must decide how much of her marriage, and her oldest friendship, she is willing to keep pretending not to see.
Opening
Just as I was wondering what to do, my best friend sent me a wall of text on how to handle it. My cheeks burned with a slight blush, but I followed her instructions, carefully soothing him. Miraculously, Liam, who had been a restless mess, quieted down.
But as I reached for my phone to thank her, a pair of arms wrapped around me from behind. Liam buried his face in my neck, his voice ragged with something that sounded like heartbreak.
