The story

At eighteen, Leo saved his younger brother Jake and his girlfriend Chloe from freezing water, but a blow to the head left his mind forever stuck at seven years old. For ten years the two of them carried him through eighteen countries in search of a cure, until they fell in love and Leo became the burden they could no longer bear.

When a fire traps them, Jake and Chloe shield Leo with their bodies and push him to safety, and both are badly burned. Waking in the hospital, Leo hears Chloe's rage: why is he still alive, why must he cling to them forever? He only wants her to be happy, and quietly decides he should die.

Yet Chloe clings to him, begging him to live, while Jake's grief turns violent. Leo cannot understand their words, only their pain, and his existence has become the thing tearing them apart.

Opening

When I was eighteen, I took a brutal hit to the head trying to save my younger brother, Jake, and my girlfriend, Chloe, after they fell through the ice. My mind froze, forever stuck at seven years old.

Jake knelt by my hospital bed, his voice choked with sobs:

"Leo, you gave me my life. I swear I'll take care of you forever."
