The story

A week before her wedding, a doctor in Harold City is run off the road at a bridge railing by Matilda Philips, the sister of Maximo Alvarez's late wife. When Maximo arrives, he leaves her on the stretcher to carry the trembling Matilda to the hospital first, signs a letter of understanding with her limp hand, and tells her the next ambulance will come soon.

She does not survive. Her ghost drifts to Maximo's side as he comforts Matilda in a private ward reserved for her, smashes a phone, and vows never to let anyone hurt her. Told the weather will stay rainy for two days, he cancels his surgeries and refuses to leave Matilda's side, even as an emergency patient with shattered organs waits.

Believing his fiancée is only being dramatic, he sends a message warning her never to contact him again, certain she will always come back.

Opening

I crashed into her eighteen times at high speed.

When Maximo arrived with the ambulance, I was being dragged out of a pile of scrap metal.

He, however, pulled aside a modified Hummer with only the bumper missing.

He held the trembling Matilda Philips in his arms.

"Mr. Alvarez, your fiancée's condition is not good; she needs to be taken to the hospital immediately."

Maximo stopped my stretcher, quickly scanning my body.

"There's not a drop of blood on her, just superficial injuries.
