The story
Keir Sterling no longer believes a word Leo says. When Leo calls from a crowded San Francisco train station before a heart follow-up, asking to be taken to the hospital, Keir mocks him and tells him to wait. Leo waits until his heartbeat slows and stops. He rises from his own body as a ghost, unseen among strangers, and watches Keir's cold texts arrive too late.
Pulled to St. Mary's Medical Center, Leo finds Keir at the side of Caleb, the boy Leo's biological mother secretly swapped him with at birth. Keir promises this is the last time he will help Leo. Leo, who once confessed he wanted to be more than Keir's brother, now understands he will never be believed again.
A story of a heart defect, a swapped heir, and a love confessed to the wrong person.
Opening
No matter how I tried to make it up to him, he wouldn't budge.
Even when I told him I wasn't feeling well, he didn't panic the way he used to.
I got off the Amtrak train and called him.
"Keir, I’m in San Francisco for my heart appointment. Can you take me to the hospital?"
Keir’s voice was sharp over the line.
"Your heart was fixed years ago. Stop playing the victim, Leo. It’s pathetic."
A dull ache throbbed in my chest.
"It’s just a follow-up," I whispered.
He let out a cold, mocking laugh.
"Fine. Then stay there and wait."
I sat obediently in a corner of the crowded station.
