The story
For six years, Leo Vance has been Ava Brown's boyfriend and assistant, staying with her from the day she had nothing to the night she became a star. But when she wins her fifth award, she stands on stage and announces her engagement to another man, Cody, crediting him as the love of her life. Leo walks out of the auditorium and calls his father, finally agreeing to come home and take over Vance Corporation.
Ava insists the engagement is only a publicity stunt and that he should wait quietly for her explanation. Yet she keeps him hidden from the media, locks him in a storeroom during an interview, and leaves him there all day without food while she takes Cody to dinner. When she finally returns, she shows no concern for him at all.
After six years of waiting for a promise that never comes, Leo decides it is time to stop holding on to his illusions.

But on the night she won her fifth award, she stood on stage and announced her engagement to another man.
“I owe all of my success to Cody’s support,” she declared, a spotlight haloing her. “He is the love of my life.”
Her eyes, deliberately or not, flickered to where I stood in the corner of the crowd, a silent warning in their depths.
I walked out of the auditorium and dialed my family’s number.
“Dad,” I said, my voice steady. “I was wrong. Go ahead and find me a match for an arranged marriage.”
My father’s joy was palpable. “Forget the marriage!
