The story
Six years after vanishing, Beatrice Campbell is dragged into a courtroom in handcuffs, accused of five murders under the name Mercy. On the judicial bench sits her ex-husband, Judge Thomas Barrett, who barely recognizes the woman he once knew. When she hints that his missing fiancée, Cassie Knowles, is in her hands, the court erupts and she is hauled away to a high-security detention center.
Detective Sean Callahan presses her for Cassie's whereabouts, reciting the story the world believes: a jealous wife who drugged her best friend, burned a house down, and fled. But Beatrice tears open her prison shirt to reveal a body covered in burns, demanding to know how an arsonist could end up more scarred than her victim.
Thomas's voice still rings through the door, insisting she burned herself. To Callahan, Beatrice offers a different account, one that begins with a charity drive at her private elementary school and a friendship she says was never what it seemed.
