The story
Dr. Elena Hayes is celebrated at the Institute for saving a student's life, but her husband Steve files for divorce, accusing her of cheating. Everyone who knows them insists the marriage is unbreakable — years ago, when a lab exploded, Elena shielded Steve with her own body and nearly died. Now she is weak from donating blood to Leo White, a student still recovering from an experiment gone wrong, and Steve's coldness leaves her collapsed on the floor.
Colleagues and the Institute's director rush to defend Elena, praising her deed and urging Steve to drop the divorce. Steve refuses, threatening to make a scene at the Institute until she signs. Elena silences them all, insisting her marriage is no one else's business, yet Steve will not relent.
When Leo wakes in the hospital, he swears on his life that nothing improper ever happened between him and Elena, and reveals his parents are taking him abroad. What Steve does next remains unseen.
Opening
The lab exploded. My wife spent the night giving blood to one of her male students. And I filed for divorce.
Everyone who knew us knew that my wife, Dr. Elena Hayes, loved me more than life itself. The director of the Institute and her colleagues all came to talk me down.
