The story
Eleanor's obsessive need for perfection rules her twins from the moment they are born. Because Chloe arrives five ounces heavier than her sister Clara, Eleanor despises her, withholding milk and forcing fasts while Clara is fed eight times a day. When Eleanor forces Chloe to eat the fatty pork she is allergic to, Chloe suffocates to death — and wakes inside her mother's womb, back on the delivery table, hearing Eleanor demand that both babies be born in the same lucky minute.
This time Chloe refuses to be born first, and a difficult labor forces a natural birth. Yet she is still five ounces heavier, and Eleanor's rage only grows. Ordered starved, Chloe is dumped into a washing machine drum by her grandmother Martha until her father Richard finds her. Richard finally defies Eleanor and raises Chloe himself with formula, but when Eleanor discovers how healthy and chubby her daughter has become, her madness escalates.
Opening
My mother had severe, obsessive-compulsive OCD.
Because I was born five ounces heavier than my twin sister, Clara, my mother despised me from day one.
Whenever I cried myself hoarse from hunger, she would pump her leftover breast milk, store it in the fridge, and save it only for Clara.
She fed Clara eight times a day with that milk.
Eventually, both Clara and I ended up in the hospital. I was admitted for severe malnutrition, while Clara was hospitalized for consuming spoiled food over a long period.
