The story
Sabrina has always answered cruelty with a smile. Frozen out by roommates, cheated on by a boyfriend, sneered at by a manager—she shrugs it off and moves on, and everyone takes her for a brainless Pollyanna.
Then her biological parents find her and bring her to their Greenwich estate, where Genevieve, the girl raised in her place, greets her with practiced tears. When Sabrina points out that Genevieve endured eighteen years of tutors, etiquette drills and screaming matches, her mother Marian turns on her, and her brother Andrew demands an apology.
Theodore Donovan, her betrothed, arrives and tosses a dissolution of their engagement onto the table, calling her an embarrassment to his name. Sabrina must decide how to answer a family that has already chosen its side.
Opening
I have always been a radical optimist.
In high school, when my roommates deliberately froze me out:
"You don't need to come to dinner with us tonight. You just don't fit our vibe anyway."
I simply pulled the duvet over my head.
"Thanks for the peace and quiet. Make sure the door clicks when you leave."
In college, when my boyfriend cheated on me with my best friend:
"We just couldn't help ourselves, Sabrina. It happened."
