The story
Leo and Mackenzie were college sweethearts who married after graduation and squeezed into a tiny walk-up in Queens. He adored her, but in New York their savings were a drop in an endless ocean. Lately Mackenzie has grown more beautiful, her clothes finer, her skin glowing, and Leo notices the cologne and matching chain that belong to Scott Wynott, heir to the Wynott fortune and brother of Leo's boss.
One night Leo comes home to see Mackenzie and Scott kissing under the streetlight. Instead of rage, he greets them as "Sis" and "Bro," and later tells Mackenzie she should be with Scott, who paid her father's gambling debt and her mother's surgery. She confesses she could not resist his generosity. Leo insists on divorce, promising to take her back if Scott ever casts her aside.
After they sign the papers, Leo returns to work, torn between happiness for her, grief at his loss, and terror of being left behind.
Opening
Late one night, I stumbled upon my wife and the heir to the Wynott fortune, locked in a passionate kiss.
My wife, Mackenzie, froze in panic.
The heir, Scott, was the picture of calm.
I walked right up to them with a big, friendly smile. "Sis! Bro! Fancy seeing you two out here."
The next day, I was handed the deed to a 2,000-square-foot apartment in Manhattan.
My wife is exceptionally beautiful.
We were college sweethearts. We got married right after graduation, moved to New York, and crammed ourselves into a tiny walk-up in Queens.
